Application and Deadline
Apply for the Pathways to PhD program using this form.
Admission to the Pathways program is on a rolling basis; however, if you intend to apply to PhD programs for Fall 2024, please submit the form no later than November 15, 2023. This will give you and your mentor sufficient time to review materials and discuss options before critical application deadlines at the end of the calendar year.
Mission
The Pathways to PhD program's mission is to support prospective students from underrepresented backgrounds through mentorship in the PhD application process. We aim to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in American University's PhD program in Public Administration and Policy and in the discipline at large.
Prospective PhD students are paired with mentors who share their research interests (a faculty member or current PhD student ) to help them navigate the PhD application process, review their application materials (e.g., a CV or personal statement), or simply chat about pursuing a career in research.
This Pathways to PhD program recognizes the critical need to support prospective students from underrepresented backgrounds such as, but not limited to:
- First-generation students in higher education
- Students of all genders and sexualities
- Students of all races and ethnicities
- International students
- Disabled students
Process
The Pathways to PhD program is dynamic and customized to suit the needs of participants. It is, therefore, important that prospective students outline their goals, research interests, and application timeline in our form. This allows us to better assess needs and pair prospective students with an appropriate mentor. Once prospective students submit the form, they are matched with a current student or faculty member who shares their research interest and is qualified to answer questions and assist with the PhD application process.
For those intending to apply to PhD programs for Fall 2024, the process may be as follows (depending on your support needs):
